2020 RR X CCC Yeah the rain has stopped!
04.10.20
Ride 2 - 490.3 miles to go.
Well what a difference 24 hours makes.
From having a months worth of rain dumped in one day to beautiful blue skies, fluffy white clouds and even a little sunshine.
Everything is good with the World when I can see blue above me. And after yesterdays disappointment, I was back smiling.
Kept today's ride really simple with my go to half century.
A fast 23 mile ride out towards Southport and the Irish Sea (It is not that often you actually see it. As it is that far out). With a picturesque view over towards Blackpool and its mighty tower.
I usually treat myself to Fish & Chips when I land here but with a Sunday Roast being prepared back home. I thought it would be a little too greedy to have both.
The route back is always a little more leisurely. Peeling off just outside of Southport itself and heading in to quieter farmland roads. I usually hit a brick wall at this point, with really tough head winds in the exposed landscape but today was not too bad.
I did see the most spectacular aerial display though. As thousands of Canadian Geese took to the air with what appeared to be the start of their winter migration. It was a really nice moment to witness.
10 miles from home and you hit a little village called Parbold.
At this point you have an important decision to make.
Do you want to climb or do you want to quietly sneak around to a lovely rolling country road is the question at hand.
With three relatively short but steep punchy climbs (14% plus). Parbold is a go to place if you have your climbing legs on.
Parbold Hill. Stoney Lane. Hunters Hill. Even Ashurst Beacon is close by and a good climb too.
Don’t get me wrong they are no Mount Baldy or Alpe d’Huez but they pack a punch and at the top you know about it. If you are feeling brave you can do a nice loop of all three. Gaining some good elevation within a short numbers of miles.
My decision was to leave the climbs for another day this month. One when I only have a couple of hours to get a ride in.
So lovely rolling country road it was. Did I happen to mention at the end of it, there is a beltin’ canal side pub!? (of course it played a part in my decision making process).
After a quick pint it was the last few miles back to New Springs via Haigh Hall Country Park.
All in all. A great Sunday ride. Coming in at 51.6 miles and in much better riding conditions.
86.3 miles down. 438.6 to go!
Ps - Your support would mean the World to me and even more so to The Arthritis Foundation…
