2020 RR X CCC Yeah just missed the rain!
06.10.20
Ride 3 - 438.7 miles to go.
A two hour ride just before sunset and although it was very wet conditions with lots of surface water and flooded roads. I luckily just missed the huge downpour that had been doing the rounds for most of the day.
Knowing I did not have time to get many miles in. I decided to try to get a little climbing done instead.
Rivington would be the local destination for ride 3 of my RR X CCC. Basically it is my back yard.
Made my way over to the Chorley side of Rivington and cycled through the amazing twisty, windy, up and down country roads back towards Bolton before making my way home.
The climbing around these parts is pretty cool. A little like Parbold. Climbs I usually love to attack and be all gassed out at the top but today I just took my time.
If I was over in California. Today would be the best days cycling you could ask for. Big Sur to Cambria. Just a truly jaw dropping phenomenal section of the Pacific Coast Highway. (I beg of you to go and see this part of the World. If you can't ride it. Hire a Mustang/Camaro Convertible. Top down. Tunes blasting - I highly recommend. Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World / Don Henley - Boys of Summer. (ON REPEAT!)
Makes the hairs on my whole body stand to attention when I think of my experiences in this part of California.
One moment you can literally touch the Pacific Ocean and the next you are hundreds of feet up looking down in to it. The route itself is I think around 70 miles and the day itself is lovingly called ‘Two Turn Tuesday’.
Basically when you get to the rest stop at Ragged Point (maybe 40 miles in) you will have just climbed two beautiful sections (The Twin Sisters). At this point you can continue another 25 miles or so to camp.
For anybody feeling good, brave or just crazy. You have the option of repeating the climbs. Meaning that you head back to the start of sister one and make your way back to Ragged Point. Each repeat adds around 18 miles to your days riding.
In 2019 I partnered up with a CCC legend and the dude who created ‘repeat’ day. His name is Troy Yung (a pretty amazing cyclist, awesome friend and epic human being).
This day is one of thee greatest I have ever had. We both set off early with the aim to repeat as many times as we could. In the end I think we did 3 full repeats which meant 127 miles and 12,000ft of climbing. (A fourth would have been attempted if not for being held up for 30 minutes or so earlier in the day due to traffic works and long holding patterns - hopefully 2021 will allow this to happen).
Another moment that makes this day as epic as it is. Jerry Davis (another CCC legend currently smashing the ride after having heart surgery earlier in the year). Once at the Cambria Pine Lodge he will hunt me down (even if I am sparked out in my tent completely exhausted. I can hear him shouting my name). We celebrate the day with a shot of chilled Tequila.
Oh to have this day all over again!
113.4 miles down. 411.6 to go!
Ps - Your support would mean the World to me and even more so to The Arthritis Foundation…
