2020 RR X CCC Winter Hill (SOB climb!)
11.10.20
Ride 6 - 360.02 miles to go.
Let me start by giving Paul, Telema and the mechanics of Thatto Cycles a huge shout out for helping me with a spare rear wheel. Mine is going to need rebuilding as the rear hub failed and has caused lots of damage due to me just continue cycling with it when I should have known better. So with the support of these guys I am able to continue riding in my attempt to clock up 525 miles before the end of October.
Woke up to a beautiful autumn day in the Northwest of England.
Perfect for a Sunday ride.
I have this 25 mile loop that starts and ends at home but takes in what I consider to be our most brutal local climb for miles around. (Winter Hill).
This loop doesn't contain this one climb though. Nooooooo - that would be too easy. It has four more beauties in it. The kind of climbing that makes you wanna puke no matter how slow you pedal up them.
Foxholes Road leading on to Marklands Road leading on to George's Lane before turning left on to Winter Hill is truly a 'son of a bitch' climb!
Tiny sections of it are 20% gradient and it tends to be a climb that you only attempt once in the year (mid summer) to see what shape you are in and think happy I don't need to do that for another 12 months.
I had to make it a part of my remote ride for the CCC and not only do it the once but head up a second time.
Yes, this 25 mile loop is all about climbing. My Garmin course plotter tells me that this route has around 2500 feet of elevation. Any road ride that works out at 1000 feet of climbing for every 10 miles cycled is pretty challenging indeed.
You can see from the profiles below the percentages you take on. What these images don't show you is an additional 2km to the actual transmitting mast on Winter Hill and it climbs all the way up to it.
This is a really wonderful ride. With views for miles around and on a beautiful day like today the Northwest is displayed at its most beautiful.
However 'the loveliness' quickly diminishes when you hit the foot of Foxholes Road for the second time. Your legs quickly go from feeling 'on top of the world' to 'nope it ain't going to be as comfortable this time around dude'.
Usually this would be a nice single 25 mile loop but making it a half century ride and then seeing that you have climbed 5696ft is really rewarding.
Still lots of miles to get in before the end of the month. Just going to chip away at it.
Together. Champions of Yes!
216.23 miles down. 308.77 to go!
Ps - Your support would mean the World to me and even more so to The Arthritis Foundation…
